Whiplash 2009 Redemption Proprietary Red Wine Blend (California; $11)

California red blends on the inexpensive side are often soft and fruity and not much else. In my experience, too many fuzz up the tongue with sweet, berry-compote notes that can put my palate to sleep and diminish the pleasures of the meal to come.

Not so with Whiplash Redemption. I knew I’d like this blend of Syrah, Barbera, and Zinfandel the minute I poured it into my glass. The shimmery garnet color promised a certain brightness I seek in the finish of a food-able red (thank you, Barbera!) And yet, there’s plenty of ripe fruit here, too (hats off to you, Syrah and Zinfandel). In short, it’s a lush, smooth wine with a vibrant finish—at a great price.
