What a debt of gratitude we owe Lorraine Lorusso. The Chicago woman is credited with creating chocolate-dipped strawberries in the 1960s for the Stop N' Shop, a former market on Washington Street known for its gourmet edge. The craze caught on—and spread miles and miles beyond the Windy City.

Today, chocolate-covered strawberries are so popular they're served at practically every candlelit dinner and wedding reception this side of the Rio Grande. We've taken the world's most recognizeable culinary symbol of romance—the chocolate-dipped strawberry—and re-envisioned it as a decadent flourless cake that's perfect for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner for two (or one).
